Steel from solar energy

In May 2022 a report was prepared and published by Hydrogen Europe and supported by The smarter E Europe, Europe’s largest platform for the energy industry, taking place annually at Messe München in Munich, Germany.

The publication contains a techno-economic analysis of using solar energy to decarbonise steel production in the EU via hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore coupled with an electric arc furnace (DRI/EAF).

The analysis is based on a comparative levellised cost of product approach, with the BF/BOF benchmark being the counterfactual scenario. The purpose of the analysis is to assess the viability of using solar energy (and renewable energy in general) for the decarbonisation of steel manufacturing and to identify the boundary conditions for this approach to become economically feasible.
