Storg Etzel begins first large-scale hydrogen storage in German salt cavern

Storag Etzel has begun storing 45 tonnes of hydrogen in an underground salt cavern in Etzel, Germany, marking the “first” large-scale hydrogen filling.

Now operational, the project can safely store up to 90 tonnes of hydrogen, following successful testing phases conducted at the converted salt dome cavities at Verteilerplatz 16.

As part of the H2Cast Etzel initiative, which began in 2022, the initiative has also been supported by Dutch firm Gasunie and backed with federal and state funding.
