Suntory eyes domestic hydrogen rollout with 16MW electrolyser in Yamanashi


Following the termination of its UK-based HyClyde project, Japan’s Suntory has announced plans to double down on domestic hydrogen deployment at its Hakushu Distillery.

Under its newly announced Green Hydrogen Vision, Suntory revealed that its 16MW electrolyser currently under construction will begin operation this year. The Yamanashi Model Power-to-Gas (P2G) System is expected to be Japan’s largest operational electrolyser.

In phase one, Suntory will use green hydrogen for sterilisation and trial distillation at the Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant and Hakushu Distilery. From 2027 onwards, Suntory plans to become the first company in Japan to operate across the entire green hydrogen value chain.
