Take 5: An interview with… Lewis Sweet, Honeywell

Honeywell is set to deploy its Protonium at the US MACH2 hydrogen hub. How does the solution use AI and machine learning to enhance electrolyser efficiency and lifespan?

Honeywell Protonium leverages advanced AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms to fundamentally transform the management of electrolyser systems in green hydrogen production. Through its hydrogen electrolyser control system (HECS), the platform applies these technologies to monitor, optimise, and control electrolyser units in real-time. This means the system continuously ingests data from sensors that track key variables such as temperature, pressure, current density, and membrane hydration.

Protonium’s ML models then analyse this data to detect patterns that indicate performance inefficiencies or early signs of wear and degradation. For instance, the system can identify micro-fluctuations that precede overheating or membrane stress, which can lead to costly downtime or reduced stack lifespan. The system doesn’t just detect issues – it proactively manages them.
