Tech risk no deal-breaker for hydrogen finance, says ING – offtake is key


Electrolyser technology choices have ‘not that much’ impact on financing success for hydrogen projects, ING’s Henry Rushton said at the World Hydrogen Summit.

The Director Energy Sector Coverage told the event in Rotterdam that due to the maturity of alkaline technology and early technical analysis of various PEM systems, tech decisions had little influence on financing.

“Alkaline technology is relatively well-established… The difference between technology providers on the PEM side is not negligible, but from the projects we’ve looked at, we’ve been relatively happy with the technical analysis on different technologies,” he said.

Much of the technology risk, he noted, can be mitigated through tailored project finance structures.
