The great compression scale up challenge

Hydrogen compression is a key aspect in two instrumental applications: hydrogen refuelling stations and energy storage. When it comes to stations, if the compressor fails, the station is down. The compressor is the heart of the system.

Within the hydrogen industry there has been consistent calls for further investment in infrastructure especially in relation to refuelling stations. The need to scale up the roll out of hydrogen stations is required in order for the wider adoption of hydrogen transportation unlocking the ability to efficiently decarbonise the roads.

With compression systems viewed as the “heart of the refuelling system”, the technology needs to be mass produced to enable an effective roll out strategy. However, hydrogen compression is facing its own difficulties in scaling up and is struggling to provide enough units to keep up with the demand.

H2 View spoke with three different players in hydrogen compression – Maximator, Baker Hughes and Howden – to find out more.
