TUI Cruises joins South Korean players to explore hydrogen SOFCs for cruise ships


TUI Cruises is working with South Korean maritime players and a European classification society to explore using hydrogen solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems on cruise ships.

HD Hyundai, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Europe Research & Development Center, and HD Hydrogen inked a joint development project agreement with DNV and TUI to develop the SOFC systems.

Until February 2026, the team will establish safety design standards for using SOFCs on cruise ships, while HD Hyundai will analyse the performance of its fuel cells under various operating conditions.
