UK and Germany unveil plans for cross-border hydrogen pipeline network


National Gas and Gascade have agreed to explore the development of a hydrogen pipeline network connecting the UK and Germany.

“The project will see up to 20GW of hydrogen transportation capacity delivered on a bi-directional basis,” National Gas said on LinkedIn, contributing to a hydrogen economy that can compete on the global stage and enhance UK and EU energy independence.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two national transmission system operators (TSOs) aim to establish the corridor through offshore pipes, which start in either Teesside, northeast England, or St Fergus in Scotland, with Gascade’s AquaDutus pipeline in the North Sea being the second connection.
