UK introduces green number plates for zero emission vehicles

It’s usually pretty hard to tell a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) from a conventional petrol or diesel car: they look and have similar ranges, both refuel up with a classic fuel pump, and the time taken to refuel is the same – three to five minutes.

All that’s about to change in the UK though with the introduction of green number plates for electric vehicles as the country accelerates towards a zero-emission future.

The new plates will raise awareness of the growing number of zero emission vehicles on UK roads, as well as help motorists benefit from local initiatives such as cheaper parking and cost-free entry into zero emission zones.

Consisting of a green flash on the left-hand side of the plate, the new number plates can be retrofitted to any existing vehicles, including cars, vans, buses, HGVs, taxis and motorcycles, as long as they emit no CO2 emissions at the tailpipe.
