University of Toronto uses AI to discover new electrolyser catalyst

Canadian researchers have used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate a new catalyst make-up to improve electrolyser efficiency for hydrogen production.

Electrolyser catalysts accelerate the electrochemical reaction, enhancing the efficiency of water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen, and are typically composed of alloys of metals and metal oxides.

The scientists from the University of Toronto (UOT) say that traditional trial-and-error techniques of finding catalysts takes too much time when trying to find the “proverbial needle in a haystack,” and used AI to speed up results.
