US national lab awarded $3m of DOE funding for hydrogen research

$3m has been awarded to Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), in South Carolina, US to further research capable of enabling pathways for hydrogen storage and production technologies.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Basic Energy Science Programme funding is hoped to aid research to provide greater insight into how hydrogen breaks down and reacts with material surfaces, as well as hoe much energy is required to split the two hydrogen atoms on surfaces.

SRNL has said the objective of the research is to provide an in-depth analysis of the interactions between two-dimensional ceramic materials and hydrogen, as well as the influence of other external gases.
