Whitepaper touts modular AEM electrolysis as cost-effective route to green hydrogen

Modular AEM electrolyser could overcome many of green hydrogen’s challenges related to scalability, cost-effectiveness and resilience, according to a new whitepaper.

The whitepaper, authored by Ansaldo Green Tech, said AEM combines the benefits of both alkaline and PEM systems while overcoming some of their material and operational limitations, positioning it to reduce the cost of green hydrogen production.

According to the document, AEM can help reduce the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH) by reducing the use of expensive, supply-constrained materials like iridium and platinum, which are used in PEM.

Despite this, AEM is compatible with renewable energy thanks to its system flexibility, allowing it to use cheap, surplus renewables.
