Take 5: An interview with… Will Wright, Vice-President at Impact Coatings AB

Thanks for taking five again with H2 View this year. There’s a good reason for that, you’ve just completed a big challenge – tell us a bit about it, how did it go?

It went well, we did not get the overall position we aimed for, however, we showcased the excellent capability of the Hyundai Nexo FCEV and we got excellent exposure of the usability of hydrogen. Five countries, four mountain passes and a few highspeed bursts on the de-restricted German motorways were all squeezed into a 24hr driving challenge! We even got the actor David Hasselhoff to record a good luck message, which can be seen on Impact Coatings’ LinkedIn page.

What was the purpose or aim of the challenge?
The event was held in conjunction with f-Cell in Stuttgart, and the scope was to show the public that it is possible to use hydrogen vehicles in day-to-day life. For us at Impact Coatings, it was also a charity event, with the proceeds of the sponsorship going to the World Childhood Foundation. We raised €6,000 with the great support from our sponsors, namely Cell Impact, Sandvik, Nilsson Energy, Vätgas Sverige, Nel Hydrogen, Gränges, Vattenfall and Hyundai Motors.

Take us from A to B – where did it start and finish, and what was the route in-between?
We choose to show the world that a fuel cell vehicle can cover almost 1,500km in 24 hours and reach places that are literally the top of the world. At least, that is how we felt when we reached the Stelvio Pass between Switzerland and Italy. A freezing cold, snowy mountain pass at a height of 2,757m above sea-level. Also nominated to be one of the best driving roads in the world by the British Top Gear team!
