The heating needs of UK homes account for just under 20% of the country’s carbon emissions. While 85% of UK homes and businesses are heated by a natural gas boiler, hydrogen offers incredible potential to decarbonise existing gas networks through blending. Despite much noise around its suitability for the application, hydrogen-powered heating can contribute to the country’s 2050 Net Zero goal.
It’s encouraging to note that the first blending innovation projects backed by Government such as H21, HyDeploy and FutureGrid have shown positive initial results with many customers using hydrogen-blended gas safely in their homes without the need for them to replace their existing appliances.
Plans to increase the blend of hydrogen within the existing gas networks are set to continue with the Government aiming for 20% hydrogen blending to be allowed in the UK’s gas distribution networks by 2026.
