Policy Pillar: Chile wants to produce the cheapest green hydrogen globally

Long-and-thin Chile is widening its commercial aspirations, particularly in the sphere of hydrogen. It is aiming for 4-5GW of green hydrogen in production by 2025, and up to 25GW by 2030.

Its solar and wind power sectors are rapidly maturing. In the past six years, Chile has increased generation capacity from these sources five-fold and, by 2030, 70% of the power grid is expected to be renewable. Chile claims the most powerful solar radiation ‘on the planet’ is found in its northern region, while winds in the south blow with the same power on land as offshore.

Green hydrogen produced in the Atacama Desert and in the Magallanes Region aims to achieve the lowest levelised cost of production globally by 2030, according to Chile’s National Green Hydrogen Strategy.

Nicolas Poblete Bravo, Director, ProChile UK, said, “We can produce 60 to 80 times the energy that Chile needs to power itself, and hydrogen gives us a solution to export this huge green energy opportunity. We are aiming to produce the cheapest green hydrogen anywhere in the world after 2030.”
