Spotlight on… Fuel cell systems and powertrain engineering

Inventor of the hydrogen racing car, GreenGT markets fuel cell systems and engineering services for high-power electric-hydrogen propulsions. The group is also offering consulting services across the entire hydrogen value chain.

On the initiative of Jean-François Weber, GreenGT was created in 2008. Drawing from his knowledge of the automotive industry, he started with the development of a battery-electric propulsion system for racing, which he rapidly realised was limited in terms of weight and recharging time. Identifying the potential of fuel cells used in the aerospace field, he launched a 100% hydrogen racing car in 2011 under the GreenGT banner.

Since then, the company has been developing high-power systems to improve the performance of electric-hydrogen vehicles. For motorsport applications, GreenGT is pioneering hydrogen endurance racing under Mission H24 – a programme aimed at creating a hydrogen category in the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours race. In 2015, GreenGT turned towards the truck industry, with a first fuel cell project integrated in a 3.5 tonnes Renault Maxity, followed by CATHYOPE and GOH, two heavy-duty vehicles of 44 and 40 tonnes respectively, running solely on hydrogen. Over the past two years, GreenGT has also expanded its customer base by bringing its expertise to clients in the rail and maritime sectors.

The technology developed by GreenGT is ahead of the curve for the integration of high-power hydrogen systems, both in terms of weight and compactness. GreenGT is structured around three sectors of activity. Starting with motorsport, a sector focusing on endurance race car development and exploitation, an excellent means of communication to demonstrate the relevance of the technology. The second sector is the mobility industry, for the design, integration and manufacture of hydrogen propulsion and fuel cell systems. The last division, Infrastructures and Regions, created in 2021, offers technological and strategic consulting for companies and regions developing hydrogen infrastructure projects.
