Axpo and its local partner Rhiienergie have opened the “largest” green hydrogen production plant in Switzerland.
Located in the Domat/Ems at the Reichenau hydropower plant, the 2.5MW facility is expected to be capable of producing up to 350 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
The jointly owned plant uses electrolysis for hydrogen production, via green electricity from the adjacent hydroelectric power plant. The hydrogen is compressed at the plant to enable convenient delivery to refuelling stations and industrial customers.
AXPO CEO, Christoph Brand, explained, “There are still a few hurdles to overcome, but we’re convinced of this green, sustainable and renewable energy carrier’s potential.”
The two companies broke ground on the site in January last year (2023), however the plant was originally due to go onstream in the autumn of 2022, before it was delayed for a year.

Axpo recently revealed plans to invest into a hydrogen production and distribution initiative designed to refuel vehicles in France’s Arve Valley.
Axpo will secure the renewable energy needed for hydrogen production, to allow for zero-emission vehicles in the region to refuel at a planned refuelling station, boasting an electrolyser capacity of up to 5MW.
