Axpo to explore 100MW green hydrogen valley in Sicily

Axpo and ENEGO will study the feasibility of a 100MW green hydrogen plant in Sicily which could scale up to 300MW.

Under a cooperation agreement, Axpo will work with HYNEGO, part of the French energy investors group, and evaluate the planned project located in the Priolo-Augusta petrochemical complex.

The two companies envisage a ‘hydrogen valley’ in Sicily, providing zero-emission fuel for local industry and transportation and may also connect directly to the European hydrogen network as part of the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative.

Axpo’s Head of Hydrogen, Guy Bühler, believes it’s important to decarbonise the Sicilian region, as it includes an “industrial site of national importance.”

“The grey hydrogen used by its refineries is produced using natural gas,” he said. “This plant would be able to replace that with CO2-free hydrogen.”

Alfonso Morriello, ENEGO Holding CEO, added, “All of the project’s stakeholders are committed to bringing the competitive advantage of green hydrogen to the local economy.”

Alongside the project in Sicily, Axpo and Infinite Green Energy have plans to develop a 30MW green hydrogen project in Abruzzo, Italy, under a joint development agreement. The facility could produce 12 tonnes per day of hydrogen.
