Ballard and Element 1 offer cost-effective hydrogen solution

Ballard Power Systems and Element 1 have collaborated to develop hydrogen power solutions using proprietary technology.

Ballard’s FCwave 200kW fuel cell module will be paired with Element 1’s M/L18 hydrogen generator, capable of producing 235kg of hydrogen per day. Together, they will produce high-purity hydrogen in the range of 0.7 to 2.2 barg.

Typically, the FCwave hydrogen supply pressure range is 3.5 to 6.5 barg, however the low-pressure result was achieved with Ballard’s software modifications to the operation of the system, with no hardware modifications made.

Using a feedstock comprising methanol mixed with water, the hydrogen produced by the generators meet ISO 14687-2019 standards for PEM fuel cells, at a “fraction of the cost of compressed or liquid hydrogen.” Due to the methanol/water mix, the infrastructure and transportation challenges associated are eliminated too.
