Ballard, Hexagon Purus set to develop new hydrogen fuel cell trucks

To provide further support for decarbonising road transportation, Hexagon Purus and Ballard Power Systems have revealed a new collaboration today (August 31) to produce class 6 and 7 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks.

The new trucks will provide a range of over 400 miles while boasting similar refuelling times to conventional trucks on the market.

As well as this, the truck is also produces no emissions due to the hydrogen fuel cell which helps to provide a competitive, clean alternative for demanding operations and moving goods through the “middle miles”.

At the heart of these new trucks is Ballard’s 8th generation of the fuel cell module FCmove which provides a zero-emissions electric power source as well as reliability of over four decades of technology development.

In addition to this, Hexagon Purus will provide a lightweight type 4 hydrogen storage system that features high energy density ProPack battery storage, and fully integrated electrified accessory systems that deliver light, efficient and long-range clean power for commercial vehicles.

The new truck is expected to feature in California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Program (HVIP) eligible vehicle list in 2022.

The establishment of Hexagon Purus Maritime will see the group’s zero-emission hydrogen technology be applied to the maritime industry, with Norway being the initial focal point from the onset. This is due to the nation having some of the strongest maritime technology industries in the world.
