Ballard utilises US funding to support the development of 3GW fuel cell gigafactory

Ballard has secured up to $40m in US funding to support the development of an integrated fuel cell production gigafactory in Texas.

Based in Rockwall, the ‘Ballard Rockwall Giga 1’ facility is expected to produce up to 20,000 fuel cell stacks and fuel cell engines per year – the equivalent to 3GW of fuel cells – with future phases anticipated to increase production capacity.

The initial $40m was received from the US Department of Energy (DOE), under the Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis, Manufacturing and Recycling Programme. Ballard plans to invest approximately $160m from 2024 to 2027 to build and commission the facility.
