bp selects BASF carbon capture technology for blue hydrogen project in Teesside

bp has selected BASF’s carbon capture technology to use at its 1.2GW blue hydrogen production plant in Teesside, the UK.

BASF’s OASE® white technology is expected to boast a carbon capture rate of up to 99.99%, with the H2Teesside project anticipated to capture and send for storage of approximately two million tonnes of CO2 per year, via the bp-led Northern Endurance partnership.

With commercial operations set to start in 2028, H2Teesside is targeting 1.2GW of hydrogen production by 2030, equivalent to over 10% of the UK Government’s 10GW by 2030 target.

BASF’s technology adds an amine-based solvent agent to the gas stream, in which it absorbs CO2, before both the CO2 and amine are separated from the hydrogen rich gas stream and then separated once more by fractionation. The CO2 will then be sent for storage, and the OASE solvent agent is re-used in the process.
