Bradford Council approves development plans for 12.5tpd hydrogen facility

Plans for a hydrogen production facility in West Yorkshire have been approved by the Bradford Council.

Being developed by Hygen and N-Gen, the Bradford Low Carbon Hydrogen (BLCH) plant is expected to be capable of producing 12.5 tonnes per day of hydrogen, enough to remove 800 diesel-fuelled buses a day from local roads.

Set to be developed on the old Birkshall gas storage site, the hydrogen will be distributed by Ryze to businesses and others in West Yorkshire wishing to use the planned refuelling facilities on-site.

The BLCH was awarded a contract as part of the UK Government’s £2bn ($2.5bn) first hydrogen allocation round (HAR1) last December (2023). H2 View understands the project became the biggest scheme to be awarded funding under the model.

N-Gen’s Managing Director, Gareth Mills, explained that the facility will support local businesses aiming to decarbonise and attract new companies and jobs to the region, “by placing the city at the forefront of the transition to clean energy.”

“The site was once home to gas holders, which stored natural gas used by the residents and businesses in Bradford,” he added. “So, it is fitting that the site will continue its heritage and now be used for the production and storage of hydrogen.”

Jamie Burns, Director at Hygen, said, “Along with our partners, we have worked tirelessly to develop these plans, which will provide a blueprint for how complex projects like this can be delivered, boosting the hydrogen and green economies of the UK.”
