Bramble Energy makes breakthrough in fuel cell production

Bramble Energy has developed an optimised fuel cell stack assembly capable of producing up to 2,000 50kW systems per year.

The £1.8m ($2.2m) project received funding from the Advanced Propulsion Centre’s (APC) Scale-up Readiness Validation Programme (SuRV), as part of the Automotive Transformation Fund in 2022.

At Bramble’s HQ and Hydrogen Innovation Hub in Crawley, the UK, they simplified the fuel cell stack assembly process through the design of its Printed Circuit Board Fuel Cell (PCBFC™), which includes integrated membrane electrode assembly into unitised PCB modules.

It’s expected that through this milestone, Bramble has now proved its low-cost production roadmap to $100/kW at 2,000 50kW stacks per year.

“In our efforts to help both the automotive and public transport industry find a clean, reliable and cost-effective way of powering vehicles, both the SuRV and HEIDI projects have helped us deliver internal efficiency development, refine our build process and create more flexibility with our design,” said Dr Tom Mason, CEO of Bramble Energy.

The Hydrogen Electric Integrated Drivetrain Initiative (HEIDI) secured £6.3m ($7.8m) in funding from the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) last year (2023). The support allowed Bramble to provide fuel cell technology for a hydrogen-powered double-decker bus.

Dr Mason added, “The UK Government’s aim to halt new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035 influences Bramble Energy’s plans. Our focus extends beyond this goal as we work towards creating real-world, commercially viable solutions for the wider transportation sector.”

Bramble’s Vidal Bharath, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), recently told H2 View that the company is pushing the boundaries on what it can achieve with fuel cells, especially with the development of its PCBFC Gen.2 technology.
