California orders six Stadler hydrogen-powered trains for $127m

California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has placed a $127m order with Stadler Rail for six further hydrogen-powered passenger trainsets.

Building off an earlier order for four hydrogen-powered intercity trains in 2023, the new trains are expected to enter revenue service in 2027.

Based on Stadler’s Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train (FLIRT) concept, according to Caltrans, the trainset design will make them more efficient, lighter and more affordable than traditional locomotive-hauled coaches.
