Canadian Pacific and CSX Corporation to launch hydrogen locomotive joint venture

Canadian Pacific Kansas City and CSX Corporation have announced plans to enter into a joint venture to build and deploy hydrogen locomotive conversion kits for diesel-electric locomotives.

Under the new joint venture, the two plan to convert one of CSX’s diesel locomotives with a Canadian Pacific hydrogen conversion kit and is set to be carried out at CSX’s Huntington workshop in West Virginia.

It comes after Canadian Pacific in December 2020 revealed it wanted to develop North America’s first hydrogen-powered line-haul locomotive by retrofitting a diesel freight locomotive with hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology.
