Following the findings of a study by Norwegian climate research institute CICERO that estimated the global warming effect of leaked hydrogen is almost 12 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kg emitted, members of the hydrogen industry have shared their reaction with H2 View.
The study, published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment on Wednesday (June 7), has said that although hydrogen itself is not a greenhouse gas (GHG), its chemical reaction in the atmosphere affects GHGs like methane, ozone and stratospheric water vapour.
Despite exhausting only water vapour and oxygen, the CICERO study suggest the leaking of hydrogen from production, transport and usage is what adds to global warming.
“The climate effects of hydrogen have been an under-researched topic. However, a few papers based on single model studies confirm our estimated global warming potential (GWP100) of 11.6,” said Dr. Maria Sand, Senior Scientist at CICERO who led the study.
