ClassNK defines requirements for hydrogen-powered ships

ClassNK has released the third edition of its “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels,” adding requirements for hydrogen-powered ships.

In addition to ships using methanol, ethanol, LPG and ammonia as a fuel, the new edition will guide the design of hydrogen in an alternative-fuelled ship.

Safety is a significant factor of the updated guideline, which stipulates requirements for installation, controls and safety devices to minimise risks to ships, seafarers, and to the environment.
