Coregas to support the development of New Zealand’s “first” hydrogen refuelling station

Coregas NZ has partnered with Halcyon to support the launch of New Zealand’s “first” green hydrogen refuelling station.

The Halcyon Green Hydrogen project will be located on Coregas NZ’s Manukau site in Wiri, South Auckland. The station will serve as an “integral piece” in growing a nationwide network of supply locations pioneered by Halcyon.

Coregas will provide its manufacturing and supply experience to the project’s technical and compliance requirements, whilst also building on experience from developing an Australian refuelling station in collaboration with Haskel.

Halcyon, the joint venture between Tüaropaki Trust and Obayashi Corporation, opened New Zealand’s “first” green hydrogen production facility in 2021 at the Mökai geothermal plant, capable of producing 180 tonnes per year using electricity generated by Tüaropaki Plant Company.

Since its opening, Tüaropaki Trust and Obayashi identified that hydrogen refuellers must be located on the main trucking routes. Peter Neate, General Manager at Coregas NZ, explained, “The transport and trucking sector in New Zealand remains a largely untapped opportunity for hydrogen-fuelled heavy vehicles, which deliver a lighter, longer-distance solution combined with fast refuelling and high payload capacity.”

He added, “We believe it’s important to create a supply chain supported by infrastructure to make hydrogen an attractive proposition to the industry. In addition, we have also invested in a Toyota Mirai that we have named H2Motuka. This is the first step in Coregas NZ moving towards adopting green fuel options for its full fleet.”

Under Halcyon’s model of hydrogen hubs, several customers can be supplied from one source, therefore keeping costs down and providing economies of scale. Dave Binnie, Tüaropaki Trust General Manager Energy, said, “Reliable, local hydrogen supply gives our customers the confidence to invest and innovate.”
