EET Hydrogen enters final negotiations with UK Government for 350MW hydrogen plant

EET Hydrogen has entered into final negotiations with the UK Government’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero for its 350MW hydrogen plant.

Located in Ellesmere, the UK, the HPP1 low-carbon hydrogen plant is expected to begin construction later this year (2024), boasting an initial production capacity of 350MW.

Capturing 600,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, the facility will support not only the UK hydrogen industry, but the HyNet Cluster too and EET’s own goal of reaching 4GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030. The hydrogen produced will be supplied to industrial businesses in the UK’s north west.

EET hydrogen will now anticipate a final decision by the UK Government on the production project later this year.

The UK has already halved its emissions from 1990 levels, according to Lord Callanan, Minster for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, who believes hydrogen will play a “vital role” in the journey to Net Zero.

Callanan added, “By moving into final negotiations with the Ellesmere project, we are working to deliver our ambition of up to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity, in an industry expected to support up to 12,000 jobs by 2030.”

Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of EET, claimed the outcome is positive for both the UK and EET. He continued, “Scaling hydrogen capacity is essential to decarbonising heavy industries.

“We appreciate the Government’s partnership which will contribute to protecting skilled jobs in the region and ensuring our industries remain competitive.”

The plans for the production facility were recently approved by Cheshire West & Chester Council, signalling the green light for HPP1 initiative.
