Fluxys named Belgium’s Hydrogen Network Operator

Fluxys Hydrogen has been appointed the Hydrogen Network Operator (HNO) for the development and management of a hydrogen transmission grid in Belgium.

The Fluxys Belgium subsidiary will act as HNO for the next 20 years and undertake the development and operation of a hydrogen pipeline network which will be part of the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB).

The network will enable low-carbon energy to be transported for both the Belgian market and to neighbouring countries. Preparatory studies have been launched by Fluxys, with both new-build pipelines being identified and the repurposing of existing pipelines where possible.

Initial studies are to lay the first pipelines in the industrial clusters that have expressed the need for hydrogen. The studies will be supported by the Relance and Recovery fund.

“Fluxys Hydrogen’s initial aim is to provide maximum support to society to achieve decarbonisation by bringing low-carbon molecules to them as part of the European Hydrogen Backbone,” said Pascal De Buck, CEO and Managing Director of Fluxys.

Plans for EHB will originally unveiled in 2020 by 11 European gas infrastructure companies from nine EU member states, before they were expanded to create hydrogen transport infrastructure in 2021.
