GIST finds optimal blends for hydrogen storage in clathrate hydrates

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has found an optimal hydrogen-natural gas blend that is capable of trapping hydrogen in cage-like molecules boosting efficiency in storage.

Unlike hydrocarbons, pure hydrogen must be stored at an extremely high pressure (>100 atmospheres) or low temperature (−20°C) naturally representing a huge economic barrier for hydrogen storage.

Gwangju theorised about trapping hydrogen inside ice-like crystals that could help make storage and transportation less demanding for the zero-emission fuel.
