Groupe E produces its first molecules of green hydrogen from hydropower in Switzerland

Swiss power utility Groupe E has produced its first molecules of green hydrogen from a newly commissioned plant near the Schiffenen dam in the canton of Fribourg.

Made up of two 1MW electrolysers, the site is planned to produce some 300 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for supply to industry and mobility, however, Groupe E says it currently undertaking tests and adjustments before full capacity can be used.

The utility has said during the test phase, hydrogen produced in small quantities is released into the atmosphere to “check the proper functioning and reliability of the machines, as well as the quantity of the hydrogen.”
