Topsoe to support SAF and renewable diesel production alongside hydrogen for the aviation industry in Canada

As the aviation industry continues to look to several zero-emissions fuels, Topsoe is exploring sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel in Ontario, Canada, alongside its commitment to hydrogen.

In order to achieve this, Refuel Energy has chosen Topsoe’s solution to develop a renewable fuel facility which will have the capacity to produce around 3,000 barrels a day.

This could be a major development for the aviation industry and could pave the way forward for sustainable aviation solutions.

The plant would utilise Topsoe’s proprietary HydroFlexTM and H2bridgeTM technologies for the production of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Planned feedstocks include a mix of waste fats, oils and greases, such as regionally sourced used cooking oil, animal fats and non-edible crop oils.

Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director of the Americas at Topsoe, said, “We are very pleased that Refuel has selected our HydroFlex™ and H2bridge™ technologies for this state of the art, standalone renewable diesel and SAF facility.

“Our market-leading technologies are complementary and together they will produce some of the lowest carbon intensity renewable fuels in the world.”

Hydrogen is also being lauded for its aviation potential, with several companies actively investing in a hydrogen-fuelled future.

The clean energy carrier holds plenty of attributes that could make it a mainstay in the aviation industry as it looks to a sustainable future. Despite this, each solution must be explored to support the greater need to reduce carbon emissions in the present.

This is just one of the many ways the aviation industry is looking to decarbonise the industry with sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, hydrogen, and battery-electric all expected to play a significant role in the future.

However, should hydrogen be regarded as the end goal for the aviation industry? And how can all solutions support decarbonisation?

This argument, and the other zero-emission solutions, will be explored in H2 View’s upcoming May edition and will showcase why all will be needed in a net zero society.
