Hexagon Purus renews contract to provide hydrogen cylinders for hydrogen buses

Hexagon Purus will supply hydrogen cylinders to New Flyer for the fourth year in a row, supporting hydrogen bus deployment in North America.

The subsidiary of NFI Group, New Flyer, will use the Type 4 storage cylinders in its next generation, zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric transit bus, the Xcelsior CHARGE FC™.

The buses, boasting a range of over 370 miles on a single refuelling, will be deployed throughout the US and Canada.

The total value of the contract will be approximately $4m and the hydrogen storage cylinders are expected to be delivered through the year (2024).

David White, Executive Vice-President, Supply Management at NFI, explained that the transport industry accounts for “around 20% of global greenhouse gas emission,” and that he expects hydrogen to play an important role.

He continued, “Hexagon Purus has been a long-term partner, and we are pleased to continue working with them [New Flyer] to offer the most innovative advanced hydrogen fuel cell electric buses in Canada and the US.”

Hydrogen-powered buses have seen an increase in deployment across the globe, with Solaris Bus & Coach leading the way in Europe. The Polish company received a record order for 130 vehicles last September (2023).
