HYBRIT produces world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at pilot scale

SSAN, LKAB and Vattenfall have revealed today (June 21) that it has successfully produced the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at a pilot scale through its HYBRIT initiative.

The HYBRIT pilot plant, situated in Luleå, Sweden, produced the sponge iron to demonstrate that it is possible to use fossil-free hydrogen gas to reduce iron ore instead of using coal and coke to remove the oxygen.

Around 100 tonnes have been made so far and, the companies state, it is the first time ever that hydrogen made with fossil-free electricity has been used in the direct reduction of iron ore at a pilot scale.
