Hydrofuel Canada developing a technology that creates green hydrogen ‘cheaper’ than fossil fuels

Canadian-based Hydrofuel has completed an exclusive licence agreement with Georgia Institute of Technology for the patent pending MAPS system that could unlock green hydrogen and ammonia that is “cheaper than fossil fuels”.

According to the company, the MAPS system enables high-yield, sustainable ammonia synthesis from air and water with high efficiency using a gas-phase electrochemical process.

In doing so, using the technology could enable the production of both green hydrogen and ammonia at rates that make it cost-competitive with fossil fuels.

The green hydrogen can be extracted from the ammonia to sell at around $1.50 per kg making it a significant development within the hydrogen community.

The company also states that the MAPS technology can decentralise the production of ammonia and hydrogen while it consumes significantly less energy than current methods, permitting local or on-site production with renewable electricity sources and long-term energy storage.

Greg Vezina, Chairman and CEO of Hydrofuel Canada, said, “Our mission is to provide green hydrogen from ammonia to end users with lower costs and life cycle pollution than any other fuel is now within our reach.”
