Masdar and Emirates Steel Arkan have partnered to develop a green hydrogen project designed to decarbonise the hard-to-abate steel sector in the UAE.
The project is expected to be the first-of-its-kind in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, located in the Emirates Steel Arkan production facilities in Abu Dhabi and currently in its installation stage.
The project will be commissioned in early 2024, demonstrating the use of green hydrogen to extract iron – a key step in steelmaking, with electrolysers already delivered to the site in order to produce green steel.
