Hydrogen planned to clean up oil and gas production in Egypt

An Egyptian oil and gas company’s decarbonisation goals are set to be supported by hydrogen with the announcement of upgrades to its refinery.

Mitsubishi Power revealed on Wednesday (June 15) it had signed a contact with Egypt’s Alexandria National Refining & Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) to upgrade its refinery’s heavy fuel oil burner, enabling hydrogen and natural gas to be used as a fuel.

The companies believe the planned hydrogen upgrades will reduce the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions by 22,000 tonnes per year.

H2 View understands the hydrogen-powered solution will be installed on the Alexandria-based refinery’s existing 100 tonne/hour boiler allowing it to fire up to 100% hydrogen by the end of 2023.

APRNPC Alexandria refinery plant currently provides 30% of Egypt’s gasoline supply for domestic consumption.

Salah Gaber, Chairman and CEO of ANRPC, said, “We are thrilled to partner with world technology leader Mitsubishi Power on innovative fuel conversion solutions that will help us to achieve our commercial goals while reducing our carbon footprint by 22,000 tonnes annually.

“Modernising existing conventional boilers by enabling fuel conversion is a practical and important milestone to enable Egypt to deliver on its ambitious energy efficiency and decarbonisation goals under the national Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy.

“We look forward to working together with Mitsubishi Power to achieve all milestones and deliver the project on schedule.”

Falk Hoffmeister, Head of Service for Mitsubishi Power Europe GmbH, commented, “We are proud to partner with Egypt’s leading oil and gas refinery ANRPC, providing them with our ground-breaking hydrogen fuel conversion technology solutions, which will enable ANRPC to lower its carbon dioxide emissions.

“The addition of hydrogen, considered to be the fuel of the future to ANRPC’s fuel mix will deliver the flexibility they need to support them in achieving cost efficiencies.”

North American Hydrogen Summit

H2 View is taking its events platform to America’s original clean hydrogen hub of California. Together with the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), we will stage our North American Hydrogen Summit in San Francisco on July 14-15.

As our summit theme Building Bridges: Hydrogen hubs and investment suggests, the event will explore the $8bn of funding announced to create at least four regional hydrogen hubs in the US. These hubs will turbo-charge the nation’s progress toward heavy trucking and industrial sectors that run without producing carbon pollution – and they may just provide the path forward to a hydrogen-fuelled future.

With California and Texas vying to be America’s hydrogen capital today, where are the hubs of tomorrow? Further still, what can other states, and countries, learn from California’s success story? And how can we build bridges to a successful flow of international investment?

If you are a member of the CaFCP, be sure to grab your ticket at a discounted rate with a code that can be provided to you by the events team.
