Hydrogen-powered backup generators come online in Australia

Energys and Telstra have deployed five hydrogen-powered backup generators at critical regional mobile phone towers around Victoria, Australia.

Manufactured at Energys’ Mulgrave facility, the hydrogen fuel cell generators have been delivered to sites in Neerim North, Chum Creek, Christmas Hills, Coldstream and Kinglake. These locations were chosen due to their vulnerability to electricity grid storm damage and their importance in regional communities during extreme weather.

The company offers 12kW, 40kW, 125kW and 250kW systems that can provide long-duration zero-emission power.

Energys’ solutions have been designed to meet international and Australian standards. Victoria revealed plans to kick start its renewable hydrogen sector, as its Renewable Hydrogen Industry Development Plan’s Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund provided grant funding for capital works projects.

Telstra received a grant of just over AUD $1m through the fund for its Renewable Hydrogen Generator Pilot at Mobile Sites project.

“We’re thankful for Telstra’s trust in Energys to deliver critical backup power systems that will service these five sites during natural disasters and extended grid outages,” explained Energys’ Managing Director, Roger Knight.

“It’s a huge endorsement of the reliability and readiness of our hydrogen generators. When it comes to the transition away from diesel power, Telstra is showing their leadership by trialling hydrogen.”

In addition, Energys Australia has plans to develop a renewable hydrogen production facility, which, H2 View understands, has secured an AUD $1m grant for a $4m project cost.

Speaking during a recent H2 View webinar, Robin Futcher, Commercial Fuel Solutions’ Managing Director, told viewers that hydrogen can solve grid congestion by utilising renewable energy that would have been curtailed due to grid connection losses.
