Hydrogen to power automated vehicles in BMW’s Leipzig factory

BMW Group is set to power Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in its Leipzig, Germany, factory with hydrogen fuel cells.

Revealed today (May 30), BMW, Intelligent Energy and FES GmbH Fahrzeug-Entwicklung Sachsen (FES), have been developing a hydrogen solution for the DS Automation built AGV in operation at the Leipzig factory.

The announcement comes after BMW Group committed to significantly reducing its carbon footprint by 2030 in October last year (2021).

Using Intelligent Energy’s IE-LIFTTM MHE fuel cell module, the first hydrogen-powered AVG has been successfully operating since January (2021) and will see more vehicles converted to hydrogen fuel cells.

David Fields, Head of Product Line, IE-LIFT at Intelligent Energy, said, “I have been proud to be part of this project from the first discussions in 2020.

“All parties have worked hard to develop a reliable package and pleased to see the first units operating on the Leipzig production line.

“Our IE-LIFT MHE module will help companies switch to fuel cell powered MHE on the factory floor or in warehouses.”

Combined with the H2 E-Pack developed by FES, it should meet quick refuelling and performance needs for the AVG fleet.

Stefan Hanisch-Meinel, Project Manager at FED, commented, “The modularity of our product, the H2 E-Pack including Intelligent Energy’s great IE-LIFT, allowed us to implement the system in the BMW AGV in a very short development time.

“We are proud to be able to contribute to the expansion of the climate neutrality of the BMW Group plant in Leipzig.”

BMW began trials on its i Hydrogen NEXT on European roads in June 2021, with hopes the prototype based on its X5 could pave the way for small-series model hydrogen-powered cars.
