INOXAP to build green hydrogen plant for India glassmaker with 20-year offtake deal

Asahi India Glass (AIS) has signed a 20-year offtake agreement for the supply of green hydrogen from INOX Air Products (INOXAP) for use in a planned glass facility in Rajasthan.

Under the plans, INOXAP will build a 190-tonne-per-year (tpy) green hydrogen plant to supply AIS’ greenfield float glass facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, which could be commissioned by July this year (2024.

The industrial and medical gas supplier is due to design, engineer, install and operate the green hydrogen plant. Under the agreement, AIS will invest in a solar power plant to power electrolysis.

Under the first phase of the project, 95 tpy green hydrogen will be supplied to the AIS plant.

AIS’ greenfield project will manufacture float glass for use in automotive and architectural sectors using technology from its partner AGC Europe.

Glass manufacturing typically relies on natural gas and oil to melt raw materials such as sand and soda ash, emitting significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). Green hydrogen can be used as a direct replacement in the heating processes, eliminating CO2 emissions.

Rupinder Shelly, Chief Operating Officer-Architectural Glass at AIS, said the Soniyana facility will be the “first-ever” float glass plant in India to be powered by green hydrogen.

“Our greenfield plant at Soniyana targets to [meet] 94% of its power requirements through green and sustainable energy sources,” Shelly said. “In addition to investment in solar power, AIS is investing to generate electricity from flue gases before releases through [the] chimney.”

Siddarth Jain, Managing Director of INOXAP, said the development would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,250 million tonnes per year.

INOXAP in January (2024), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra to build a $3bn 500,000 tpy green ammonia plant.
