ITOCHU to explore potential of using Amogy ammonia cracking tech onboard its vessels

Amogy and ITOCHU have agreed to explore the potential application of ammonia cracking technology on its maritime vessels.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), ITOCHU will investigate the opportunities for implementation of Amogy’s tech onboard its owned, operated or chartered vessels.

The modularised system is capable of transforming liquid ammonia into electrical power, via cracking it into its base elements of hydrogen and nitrogen. The hydrogen is then funnelled into a fuel cell for efficient electricity generation onboard a vessel.

Once suitable vessels are identified to be retrofitted or newly designed, the two companies will potentially explore other initiatives such as ammonia bunkering projects, equipment utilisation and collaborations in ammonia supply.
