Japanese liquid hydrogen engine-powered vessel design awarded AiP

Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K Line (MOL) has been granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) by ClassNK for a vessel design with a liquid hydrogen-powered engine.

Said to be the “world’s first” AiP certification for a ship equipped with a low-speed two-stroke hydrogen-fuelled engine as the main propulsion, the vessel was a join design between MOL, MOL Drybulk, Onomichi Dockyard, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG).

The DW 17,500 vessel is set to be constructed by Onomichi where J-ENG’s engine and Kawasaki’s marine hydrogen fuel system (MHSF) will be installed by 2026.
