Johnson Matthey blue hydrogen tech selected for bp’s 1.2GW UK project

bp has selected Johnson Matthey’s (JM’s) low-carbon (blue) hydrogen technology for its proposed 1.2GW hydrogen production site in the UK.

Anticipated to kick-start operations in 2028, the H2Teeside project plans to boast a 1.2GW production capacity by 2030, producing hydrogen from North Sea natural gas, storing up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The oil and gas major signed a licensing and engineering agreement for JM’s LCH technology, which couples a gas-heated reformer with an autothermal reformer (GHR-ATR), which JM says offers the lowest natural gas usage commercially available today while capturing up to 99% of CO2.
