Komatsu develops hydrogen-powered excavator concept

Japanese machinery manufacturer Komatsu has developed a new concept hydraulic excavator, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system.

Utilising a Toyota-produced hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen tank, the machine comes as a step towards Komatsu accelerating its efforts on the commercial production of medium and large construction equipment powered by hydrogen.

Noting a refuelling time much shorter than that required to recharge batteries, the company says it is advancing its R&D efforts to use hydrogen as a “promising electrification choice” for medium- and large-sized vehicle models.
