Labour leader wants UK to lead global hydrogen from Scotland energy HQ

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has placed his full support behind hydrogen during an event to mark Scotland’s central role in the party’s UK-wide clean energy push.

During a presentation in Edinburgh, accompanied by Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar, Starmer said the US Inflation Reduction Act is setting the pace, and in seven months, “has created more jobs than the UK has in seven years”. But he believes a window of opportunity still remains ajar.

“Some nation will win the race on hydrogen power – why not us?” he said.

“We have tremendous advantages here: our coast, our shallow waters, our universities, our creativity, the depth of our skills, the graft of our people, the superpower sciences, the technological edge, and yes – if you can believe it, even our weather. Britain has the second largest wind capacity in the world.”
