Large-scale hydrogen salt caverns to be developed by Gasunie and Storag Etzel

Gasunie and Storag Etzel have agreed to develop 1TWh capacity large-scale hydrogen storage caverns in the Etzel salt dome.

Located in the German state of Lower Saxony, the caverns will be connected to the Dutch and German hydrogen market and close to the future Gasunie hydrogen network HyPerLink and the Port of Wilhelmshaven.

The two companies will develop and operate the multi-cavity storage facility, following close collaboration on the pilot project H2CAST which involved testing hydrogen storage in two small existing caverns.
