Linde joins H2Accelerate; commits to green hydrogen for trucking

Linde has today (Sep 28) made its latest move in the evolving hydrogen economy, having become the seventh member in H2Accelerate.

Committed to the accelerated deployment of green hydrogen for trucking, H2Accelerate is also formed of Daimler Truck, IVECO, Volvo Group, OMV, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

Having installed approximately 200 hydrogen refuelling stations worldwide, Linde now brings a wealth of knowledge to the group as it works to decarbonise the trucking sector.

On Linde’s new membership, David Burns, Vice-President of Clean Energy Development at Linde, said, “We have been in the hydrogen business for a long time and are committed to helping the world to reach its climate targets by contributing with our knowledge expertise and infrastructure to the development of the hydrogen economy.

“The task ahead of us is large and complex, as is the environmental challenge that we currently face. The world needs to work together if it wants to come up with a timely solution to tackle climate change.

“Trucking is one of the sectors that can substantially reduce its emissions if switching from diesel to clean hydrogen. We are very glad to be part of the H2Accelerate collaboration to facilitate and drive that switch.”

Ben Madden, spokesperson for H2Accelerate, added, “Linde’s knowledge and experience in developing hydrogen production and refuelling facilities adds to an already impressive set of hydrogen fuel providers within the H2Accelerate collaboration.

“With joint efforts from truck OEMs and hydrogen refuelling plays, the H2Accelerate collaboration will allow the hydrogen trucking sector to reach mass market scale on the timelines required to achieve ambitious climate objectives.

“The addition of Linde’s expertise and commitment to the collaboration will increase the speed at which a European hydrogen fuelling network that is truly capable of serving end user needs can be rolled out. We are excited to be working with Linde to achieve this goal.”

H2Accelerate participants believe that synchronised investments across the hydrogen trucking sector during the 2020s will create the conditions for the mass market roll-out of hydrogen fuelled heavy duty transportation which is required to meet the European ambition of net zero emissions by 2050.

How Linde is scaling up to serve the growing hydrogen mobility market in North America

Linde is currently in the process of retrofitting its Ontario, California plant to produce green hydrogen to fuel the US state’s mobility market. Targeting the second quarter of 2021 for full commercialisation, the facility will manufacture green hydrogen using renewable methane, in addition to producing conventional hydrogen.

With this investment, the US-German industrial gas giant will be able to initially produce 2.6 metric tons of green hydrogen per day – enough to fuel up to 1,600 vehicles a day – helping to avoid up to 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. As demand for green hydrogen grows, Linde plans to expand its capacity accordingly, and revealed to H2 View that the US mobility market is a big focus for the company.
