LINE Hydrogen, Bonney Energy to explore hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in Tasmania, Australia

Hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in Tasmania is set to be established after LINE Hydrogen signed an ‘Australian first’ with Bonney Energy to develop the critical infrastructure.

H2 View understands the companies will work together to develop opportunities to roll out hydrogen refuelling utilising Bonney Energy’s existing network of service and refuelling stations in Tasmania.

Coming as what is said to be a first-of-its-kind agreement in Australia, the partners hope to make a green-hydrogen powered supply chain a reality.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the parties will also identify and progress options for hydrogen distribution from LINE Hydrogen’s planned production plant in George Town, Tasmania, throughout the proposed network, including delivering to any off-takers.

The project is expected to be launched alongside LINE commencing hydrogen production from the Bell Bay Solar Farm in early 2023.

Commenting on the new project, Brendan James, founder and Executive Chairman of LINE Hydrogen said the partnership with Bonney Energy will help to close the gap between green hydrogen production and its end-use.

“Fundamental to any transition is to work with the end-user,” said James. “It is by working with Bonney Energy on a distribution and public refuelling transition that we will deliver end users with the options they need.”

He added, “Australia’s transition to green hydrogen as a deliverable fuel is not something we can achieve on our own. It is by working with forward thinking and innovative partners that we can achieve change at the local, national, and international level.”

In July (2022), the Tasmanian Government revealed its green hydrogen feasibility studies concluded that the production and use of green hydrogen in Tasmania is technically feasible.

David Miller, CEO of Bonney Energy, commented, “We’re pleased to be working with LINE Hydrogen to roll out opportunities in Tasmania, and potentially more broadly. Hydrogen will be a significant element that fuels the future of Australia’s supply chain  and Bonney Energy is looking to play a key role in that transition.”
